What are the different types of Peppermint and their uses?

Peppermint comes from the Mint plant (especially from Mentha piperita), there are 25 different species of mint and is commonly known as Pudina in India. Peppermint is actually a natural hybrid cross between water mint and spearmint. In addition to its medicinal properties, mint leaves were rubbed on tables to welcome guests in Greece, and mint tea is still customarily offered to arriving guests in the Middle East. In India, Pudinah is commonly used in daily food items such as Chutney (paste with other spices) to enhance taste and help indigestion.

In Ayurvedic science, Pudinah is used to pacify vitiated Kapha and in other formulations to enhance palatability. In Ayurveda Peppermint is said to be useful to control the extra flow of Urination and loose motions. It is believed that regular intake of Pudinah/Peppermint as herbal tea promotes appetite and supports healthy heart circulation.

In this Modern world also Herbal Infusion prepared from Peppermint is regularly used with other herbs like Ginger for reducing fever and body ache. The Herbal infusion of Peppermint also supports the soothing effect of colon/intestinal lining in Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Uses:

1. Herbs of mint are much esteemed in India as aromatic, carminative, stimulant, antispasmodic, stomachic, and emmenagogue.

2. It’s different habitat-wise local species are Arbi, Jungli Persian, Jaliyan, Nanap, Devmanjari, etc.

3. Following species contain a high percentage of menthol

(i) Mentha Viridis (M. spicata) – is known as spearmint and contains carvone and is used in India as Pudina.

(ii) M. pulegium – It contains pulegone.

(iii) M. piperita – Peppermint oil is obtained by steam distillation from fresh aerial parts of M. Piperita.

4. It is a very good carminative medicine. Leaves are used as condiments. It is not advised to take it in cases of ulcers, acidity, etc. A tincture of mint is used in Homeopathy.
